From the Editor

I'm going to bet that if you are not already using virtualization technologies in your enterprise, you are either testing them or you will be testing them within the next year. Why? Because virtualization has the potential to dramatically improve your agility -- the ability to get new machines deployed faster -- and can often reduce the number of servers required in your data center, where servers are often running underutilized.

When we think of virtualization, we tend to focus on virtual machine technology, like the exciting new capabilities in the upcoming Windows Server 2008 platform. To be sure, the Windows Server Virtualization and Server Core technologies are essential and there is a great screencast demo showing support for an 8-core virtual machine. But there are other ways that virtualization techniques can improve the deployment, performance, and manageability of your environment. For instance, the desktop virtualization capabilities of Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 let you create separate virtual machines on your Windows desktop, each of which virtualizes the hardware of a complete physical computer. There is also the application level virtualization found in the Microsoft SoftGrid Application Virtualization Platform. And for presentation level virtualization, be sure to familiarize yourself with new Terminal Services in Windows Server 2008 for delivering access to centrally managed applications and resources. Get the Windows Server 2008 beta and see for yourself.

Of course, creating a virtual machine environment means that you have to manage it. For a great overview of Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager, check out the TechEd 2007 podcast interview with Ed Yuen, technical product manager for System Center Virtual Machine Manager. And for ongoing discussion of virtualization technologies at Microsoft, the Microsoft Virtualization Business and Technology Blog shares thoughts and advice for organizations that are investigating or have dived in to virtualization technologies.

When it comes to IT security, most enterprises really have roughly the same issues to deal with. Microsoft is no exception, and we've found that there are four general types of security tools that every organization absolutely must have. In this TechNet Magazine article, see what the Risk Management and Compliance team at Microsoft found to be the essential tools for providing the desired controls and monitoring in a centralized, cohesive fashion.

Also on the security front, AccessChk v4.0 is now available for download on the Windows Sysinternals page. AccessChk is a security utility that shows you what accesses users have to files, registry keys and services. The new update adds support for kernel objects and named pipes.

And finally, if you are looking for a simple and functional desktop deployment infrastructure, check out the 19-page Quick Start for Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) 2007 Guide. It walks you through a basic setup, build creation, and installation using Business Desktop Deployment 2007, which is part of the Windows Vista Solution Accelerator Suite, including the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment tool, Windows Vista Security Guide, and the Data Encryption Toolkit for Mobile PCs.
